Son of the Bride
2001
Synopsis
Rafael is the owner of a restaurant that bears the family name, Belvedere. For some time, he has taken care of everything. He´s separated, has an eight year old daughter, a girlfriend who´s only twenty years older than his daughter, an ex-wife, a father with a non-hereditary vitality, a mother in a nursing home, several creditors, nightmareish insomnia, all-night TV marathons of "El Zorro" as sole company, a cell phone glued to his ear, bad temper, an upset stomach, selfish attitudes and problems of all sorts arising througout the day, several times a day and simultaneously, so he can never think, at least for a second, how to make changes in his life.
Norma, his mother, has Alzheimer´s and Nino, his lucid father, feels and acts like Rafael never could. Pressured to sell the restaurant, he manipulates other people´s feelings and his current partner suffers from it. He endures his ex-wife´s rage for forgetting to pick up their daughter from school and his daughter´s reproaches, who is afraidof the permanent discussions of their parents as well as distrustful and incredulous towards Rafael, as a defensive mechanism due to many promises unfulfilled. Also the appearance of a strange annoying guy who turns out to be Juan Carlos, his old partner and childhood friend who he hasn´t seen for years, further complicates the life of Rafael.
As if that wasn´t enough, one night, his father tells him he wants to get married at a church, which he never did before due to the anarchist beliefs of his youth.
After a heart attack, Rafael agrees to sell the restaurant and decides to help his father marry his mother. But when they inquire at the parish church, they learn they must wait for a special authorization. After a while, when Rafael finds out that the Church has refused such authorization, he decides to keep this information hidden from his father and organize the marriage anyway.
In a small chapel they had visited many times, Rafael leads Norma silently, arm in arm. They find family, friends, staff of the Belvedere, and standing before the altar, Nino, impeccable. Norma doesn´t notice anything and at times wishes to leave. A false priest conducts a fake ceremony and pronounces them husband and wife, letting the newlyweds walk out of the chapel, arm in arm, slowly, without any music or exclamations.
They arrive by car to the block of the Belvedere. Puzzled, but without nostalgia, Nino wants to know what are they doing there, since the place is not theirs anymore. Rafael says he bought another place just across the street, smaller and humbler, which had declared bankruptcy. To start from scratch, like his father did, seems a great prospect. Nino embraces Rafael as never did, the whole weight of his life goes into that embrace. Nati and Sandra cry, everyone is excited and happy. The party is silent, quiet. Victoria wants his daddy to marry so she can organize the party. Nino helps Norma to a slice of wedding cake, playfully. Rafael and Nati watch them at a distance and he feels that his father lives like Fred Astaire dances; it seems so easy. Nati says "yes, I do". Rafael will have his picture taken with his parents, like the one they took when he was a kid standing between his parents, only now it is Norma who stands in between Rafael and Nino, beautiful, smiling. Sadly, Rafael and Nino turn out blurred.
