The queen of fear

2018

Synopsis

Robertina can’t focus. The premiere of “The Golden Time”, her long awaited one-man theatre play, is only a month away. The pressure on her rises as the expectation grows. She should devote to her show but can’t concentrate on work. She forgets things, postpones rehearsals, always in a rush. Fame and it’s compromises have submerged her in a constant state of anxiety that conspires against any endeavour, no matter how little.

Robertina lives out of place. And every attempt to conceal it turns her into a funny character.

It’s been a while since her husband left her, but she hasn’t accepted it yet. Since then, insecurities follow her. Her comfort life has turned into a hostile landscape, where in spite of the team of maidens at her disposal, a simple power outage can provoke profound terror.

One morning on her way to the theatre, Robertina receives a phone call. Her greatest friend, Lisandro, has suffered a relapse and may not have much time left. Robertina feels suddenly filled with anguish and lonely. Without prior notice, she follows the impulse to visit him. She hops on a plane heading north of Europe (where he lives) and disappears, leaving her responsibilities behind.

Away from home, Robertina gets carried away by a powerful drift. Together with Lisandro they walk the streets of a cold and strange city, enjoying the anonymity that comes with travelling. They dance, get drunk, make a fool of themselves. They also meditate and talk: About friendship, sex, life and death. Robertina puts off her return trip once and again, dodging her manager’s desperate attempts to reach her. Spending days immersed in this vitality and trance ends up confronting her with the reflection of her own absurd life. She knows there’s a life waiting for her, but it feels like somebody else’s.

After parting with Lisandro she flies back to Buenos Aires. Back home, everything seems to have intensified: her manager, the fame, the pressure, her husband’s absence. The day of the premiere comes and, despite the carelessness, the play is once again a total success. On her way home, a changed Robertina wonders if the same fears await her. Or, maybe, salvation.
